Once considered Newcastle's less successful neighbour, nowadays Gateshead is a town on the up. With regeneration in the Tyne and Wear area gathering speed, especially along the river-front, the town now offers much more for the potential visitor than it once did.
With such sights as the beautiful and award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge that gracefully spans the Tyne and the now iconic 'Angel of the North' sculpture on the road into town, Gateshead is fast becoming a regional centre for arts and architecture.
In terms of retail therapy, Gateshead is home to Europe's largest shopping centre - the MetroCentre - as well as a number of smaller shopping areas in town, all of which are easily accessible via the local Metro network.
